Tummy Tuck - Abdominoplasty

Tummy Tuck - Abdominoplasty

An abdominoplasty, or “tummy tuck”, corrects the appearance of a dropping or protruding abdomen.

What is it?

Abdominoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure of the abdominal wall which involves removing excess skin and sometimes fat. The tummy tuck procedure also allows tightening abdominal muscles, removing scars and stretch marks.

Abdominoplasty operations vary in scope and may be subdivided in two categories. To choose the best suited option, the surgeon takes into account the patient’s skin quality and tonicity, degree of excess fat, abdominal muscle tone and general morphology. The abdominoplasty will involve either:

An abdominoplasty should not be performed on patients suffering from general overweight.

What is the procedure?

Before an abdomioplasty, as before any cosmetic surgical intervention, a medical consultation is necessary.
It allows the surgeon to understand the patient’s requests, to perform a general check-up, and to propose the best suited solution. A second consultation is required in order to allow the patient sufficient time to reflect upon the procedure and take a well-informed decision.

An abdominoplasty lasts between 90 minutes and 3 hours, depending on how much fat and skin you’re having removed and the technique your surgeon is using. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and requires 1 to 3 days hospitalization.
The surgeon makes a horizontal incision on the lower abdomen, excess skin is trimmed away, muscles are tightened with sutures and then healthy skin is pulled over the treated area. After the operation, a stomach compression bandage must be worn during 4 to 6 weeks.

What can be treated?

An abdominoplasty results in a flat tummy, reduced skin folds and a tighter and better looking skin. The abdomen recovers an appearance that is balanced and in harmony with the rest of the silhouette. Results start to be appreciated 2 months after the surgery. A healthy lifestyle and a keeping a stable weight will help maintain results of a tummy lift.

Side effects and risks ?

As in any cosmetic surgical intervention, certain complications are possible. For each patient, the ratio between benefits and risks must be carefully evaluated. More detailed information will be delivered by the surgeon during the initial consultation.
