Eyelids - Blepharoplasty

Eyelids - Blepharoplasty

Rejuvenates and enhances the beauty of the eye contour.

What is it?

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgical intervention on the eyelids. It improves the eye contour by removing excess skin or fat from eyelids. Its aim is to correct unsightly features and signs of ageing such as wrinkles, sagging eyelids and bags beneath the eyes. Blepharoplasty may be performed on the upper, lower or both eyelids.

What is the procedure?

Before a blepharoplasty, as before any cosmetic surgical intervention, a medical consultation is necessary. It allows the surgeon to understand the patient’s requests, to perform a general and ophthalmological check-up, and to propose the best suited solution.

A blepharoplasty is usually performed under local anaesthesia and ambulatory care, meaning it requires no hospitalisation. When localised on the upper eyelids, the intervention mainly consists in removing excess skin. Performed on the lower eyelids, it consists in removing fatty deposits responsible for bags under the eyes. A blepharoplasty may be associated with other surgical or aesthetic medical acts, such as a face lift, lipostructure or filler and botulinium toxin (Botox®) injections.

What can be treated?

Blepharoplasty improves the cosmetic appearance of the eyes, producing a more rested and fresh look. It restores overall youth to an ageing face. These results are long lasting, but it takes 3 to 6 months for them to stabilise and for the scars to fade away.

Side effects and risks?

Pain, swelling and bruising may be expected after the surgical procedure, and usually last 1 to 2 weeks. Blepharoplasty leaves almost no visible scars since the surgeon hides the incision lines in the natural skin folds above and below the eye, or on the inner surface of the lower lid, and the incisions are closed with very fine stitches.

As in any cosmetic surgical intervention, certain complications are possible. For each patient, the ratio between benefits and risks must be carefully evaluated.
